Pan Am Fun in the Sun beach towel, 1980s
This beach towel was produced with Pan Am branding in the 1980s. Its graphic combines a pair of sunglasses and a bottle of suntan lotion with bold diagonal stripes, the slogan Fun in the Sun and the airline's blue globe logo. The colours are cream, orange, blue and black, and it measures 192 x 84 cm.
The flight as part of the holiday.
Pan Am's blue globe, nicknamed the Blue Meatball, was introduced in the 1950s and became one of the best-known marks in aviation. It appeared on aircraft, flight bags and printed material, and on lifestyle pieces like this towel that carried the brand beyond the airport.
Founded in 1927, Pan Am promoted itself as the World's Most Experienced Airline and built a network that included leisure routes to Hawaii and the Caribbean. The airline ceased operations in 1991, which gives its branded objects a fixed place in the history of travel.
Original Pan Am textiles are collected as part of travel-related Americana. Beach towels were made to be used, and many did not survive, so original examples from the 1980s are uncommon.
Pan Am branded objects continue to attract collectors of aviation history and mid-century travel design.
Towels were washed, used and discarded, so original Pan Am examples from the 1980s are less common.
Vintage travel graphics are popular in interiors and summer styling, adding interest in original airline pieces.
