A pink Gucci puffer from the decade in which the family fought over the house. It belongs to Milan's 1980s, when the padded jacket came down from the mountains and became a garment of the city.
This puffer gilet was made by Gucci in Italy in the 1980s for an autumn-winter season. It is pink, with green stripe details at the front, a high collar, a front zip and three zipped pockets. Inside, it carries the house's green-on-white label and a Gucci logo printed on leather. Gucci was founded in Florence in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, and in the 1980s it was still owned and run by his descendants: Aldo Gucci had been chairman since 1953, and his nephew Maurizio inherited half of the company on the death of his father, Rodolfo, in 1983. No documentation connects this gilet to a particular collection, but it belongs to that period, the last decade in which Gucci was a family business.
The last decade of a family house, in pink.
The 1980s were the most turbulent years in Gucci's history. In 1982 the family businesses were brought together in a single public company, Guccio Gucci SpA, in an attempt to ease tensions. In 1984 Maurizio, with the support of his cousin Paolo, removed Aldo from control, and in 1986 Aldo, then 81, was sentenced in the United States to a year in prison for tax evasion. Maurizio believed that wide distribution and mass production had weakened the brand, and he wanted to return it to luxury. In 1989 the investment bank Investcorp, which had bought out the other family shareholders, took a half share of the company, and Dawn Mello, president of the New York store Bergdorf Goodman, was hired to revive it. She brought in Tom Ford, who became creative director in 1994, a year after Maurizio sold his remaining stake and the family's involvement came to an end.
In early 1980s Milan, affluent teenagers began to gather at a snack bar called Al Panino and later at the Burghy burger restaurant in Piazza San Babila. Known as the paninari, they became one of Italy's defining youth styles of the decade. Their uniform was built around the puffer jacket, above all brightly coloured Moncler, worn with Levi's 501s, Timberland boots and Ray-Ban sunglasses. The look spread across Italy and reached Britain, where the Pet Shop Boys released the song Paninaro in 1986. An Italian style magazine later credited the designer Massimo Osti with bringing the down jacket from the mountains into the city. A pink Gucci puffer belongs to that moment, when padded outerwear in bright colours became a sign of Italian city style.
The gilet is cut for movement. Without sleeves, it keeps warmth on the body while leaving the arms free, and its padding gives the volume that defines the puffer. The details come from sportswear: a high collar against the wind, a full front zip and three zipped pockets on the front. The colour comes from fashion. Pink is set against green stripe details, and green has long been a Gucci colour, from the house's green-red-green web stripe to the green of the label inside this gilet. The shell is 100% polyester, a practical synthetic for outerwear. At 51 cm across the chest and 61 cm from collar to hem, the gilet sits at the hip.
Pink on the outside, Gucci green in the details.
The 1980s at Gucci have returned to view. Ridley Scott's 2021 film House of Gucci, with Lady Gaga, dramatised the family feud of that decade for a new audience. The house itself is looking back: since 2025 Gucci has been led by Demna, whose Pre-Fall 2026 collection, Generation Gucci, drew on several of the house's past eras. Pieces made while the family still ran the company record Gucci before its reinvention in the 1990s. Condition matters for a garment of this kind. Pale colours show marks easily and padded outerwear can lose its volume, and a 1980s pink gilet in excellent condition keeps both its colour and its shape.
House of Gucci and Demna's archive-led Gucci have drawn attention back to the house's earlier decades, including the 1980s.
Pink outerwear marks easily and padded garments can lose their volume. 1980s examples in excellent condition are uncommon.
Investcorp and Dawn Mello arrived in 1989, followed by Tom Ford. Pieces from the 1980s record Gucci before that reinvention.
