Snooker balls set on a metal buckle: a novelty detail on a polished leather belt. It catches a decade when the game drew some of television's largest audiences.
This Escada belt dates from the 1980s. It is made in shiny leather and fastened with a metal buckle mounted with snooker balls. It was made in Italy, measures 100 cm in length and is a size 42 IT / 10 UK.
A game, set on a buckle.
Escada was founded in Munich in 1976 by Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley and named after an Irish racehorse. The label expanded rapidly through the 1980s, entering the US market in 1982, with Margaretha Ley as chief designer and a style built on strong colour, pattern and decoration.
Snooker became one of the most watched sports on British television in the 1980s. The 1985 World Championship final, decided on the last ball after midnight, drew an audience of around 18.5 million on BBC Two.
The shiny leather strap gives a clean base for the novelty buckle, where the snooker balls add colour and a playful note. The belt is in excellent vintage condition.
A playful note on polished leather.
Novelty and figurative accessories from the 1980s draw interest for their humour and period character. Italian-made Escada examples pair that wit with good materials.
Figurative and novelty accessories from the 1980s attract collectors of the decade's design.
Mounted decorative elements can loosen or be lost, so novelty buckles in excellent condition are fewer.
Sporting motifs remain a recurring source of humour and reference in accessories.
