A military shape rendered in navy velvet, with gold-tone buttons and padded shoulders. It shows how 1980s fashion turned functional clothing into a dressed-up statement.
This Escada jacket dates from the 1980s. It is a bomber in navy blue velvet with a military print, cut oversized with shoulder pads, and fastened with gold-tone metal buttons. It has two zipped front pockets and a padded lining, and was made in Italy.
A military shape in navy velvet.
Escada was founded in Munich in 1976 by Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley. Under Margaretha Ley, chief designer until 1992, the label became known for bold colour, pattern and decoration, and it expanded rapidly through the 1980s, entering the US market in 1982.
Broad, padded shoulders defined the 1980s silhouette, and military details such as metal buttons were widely used in women's fashion. The bomber, originally a flight jacket, fitted easily into that vocabulary.
The navy velvet softens the military print and the utilitarian shape, while the gold-tone buttons add polish. Shoulder pads and a padded lining give the jacket its volume. It is in very good vintage condition.
Velvet softens the uniform.
Oversized 1980s jackets remain a regular reference in contemporary dressing. A velvet bomber from Escada's Margaretha Ley years combines the decade's volume with the label's taste for rich materials.
Oversized 1980s jackets from designer labels draw steady interest from wearers and collectors.
Velvet can crush and wear at the edges, so jackets in very good condition are fewer.
Military-inspired outerwear remains a recurring theme in fashion.
