A scarf ring in bright rhodium, shaped by the curving language of Art Nouveau. It turns a practical fastening into a small decorative object.
This Christian Dior scarf ring dates from the 1980s. It is rhodium plated, with a design drawing on Art Nouveau, and measures 2.8 x 1.9 x 1.9 cm, with an inner opening of about 2 x 1.3 cm.
A practical fastening, treated as ornament.
During the 1980s Christian Dior was led by Marc Bohan, artistic director from 1961 to 1989. Alongside the collections, the house name appeared on a wide range of accessories made under licence, from jewellery and scarves to the small pieces made to wear with them.
Art Nouveau flourished around 1900 and returned to favour in the 1960s and 1970s, when its curving lines influenced graphics, interiors and jewellery. By the 1980s its motifs were part of the repertoire of costume jewellery.
The design follows the Art Nouveau taste for curving, organic line. Rhodium plating gives the metal a bright, white finish that resists tarnish. The ring is in excellent vintage condition.
A curving line in bright metal.
Scarf rings remain practical companions to silk scarves. A Dior example with an Art Nouveau design combines that use with a period reference.
Small Dior accessories from the 1980s, including scarf rings, attract interest from collectors and scarf wearers.
Small metal accessories were easily mislaid, which affects how many period examples survive in excellent condition.
The revival of Art Nouveau from the 1960s onwards left a lasting mark on jewellery and accessory design.
