Gold stripes and a silver plaque: Dior cufflinks from the decade the house learned to dress men.
These cufflinks were made in France for Christian Dior in the 1970s. Each is in gold-tone metal with a diagonal stripe texture and carries a silver-tone rectangular plaque engraved with the Dior logo; each measures 3 by 2 cm. In the 1970s Dior, under Marc Bohan, extended its name into menswear with the Christian Dior Monsieur line, and cufflinks were among the accessories that brought the house into men's wardrobes.
Two metal tones meeting on a small surface.
Cufflinks were a standard part of formal and business dress, and in the 1970s couture houses offered designer versions bearing their logos. They allowed men to wear a fashion name discreetly, at the wrist, where it could be seen when the hands moved. Dior's combination of gold and silver tones reflected the decade's taste for mixed metals.
Even as men's fashion loosened in the 1970s, double cuffs, ties and tailored suits remained essential for formal occasions and many workplaces. Accessories such as cufflinks were a way for men to express taste within the rules of classic dress.
The diagonal stripe texture gives the gold-tone surface movement and catches light. The silver-tone plaque, smooth and rectangular, provides contrast and carries the engraved logo. The result is a balanced design in which texture and smoothness, gold and silver, are set side by side.
Texture against smoothness, gold against silver.
Vintage designer cufflinks are sought by those who appreciate classic tailoring and small, well-made details. This Dior pair, in very good condition with minimal wear, is ready to be worn.
Vintage cufflinks and tie clips are sought by those who value classic tailoring.
Cufflinks are often separated; complete pairs in very good condition are less common.
Renewed interest in tailoring has brought attention back to its accessories.
