Footless tights, the uniform of the 1980s exercise studio, sold under the Dior name. They show how quickly the fitness look was taken up by the couture houses.
These Christian Dior footless tights date from the 1980s and are in mixed colours. They end at the ankle, in the manner of dance and exercise wear.
The exercise studio, signed Dior.
Marc Bohan led Christian Dior from 1961 to 1989. In these years the house's licensed hosiery carried the Dior name into everyday wardrobes, in many colours and finishes.
Jane Fonda's first workout video was released on 24 April 1982. Leotards, leg warmers and footless tights moved from the studio into street and evening dressing.
The footless cut is the defining feature: it allowed the tights to be worn with bare feet, ballet shoes or trainers, and layered under leg warmers.
A cut taken from dance and exercise wear.
Dior footless tights record the meeting of couture licensing and 1980s fitness culture, and serve stylists and costume departments recreating the period.
Fitness dressing of the 1980s draws steady interest from collectors and stylists.
Hosiery and exercise wear were rarely kept, so original Dior examples are fewer.
The crossover between activewear and fashion that began in the 1980s remains part of contemporary dressing.
