A Friend at Your Side

The Object and Its Moment
Issue 432

This is issue No. 432 of Grazia, a 24-page weekly published by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore in June 1949. Mondadori launched the title in 1938 in response to Lei, the women's weekly of its rival Rizzoli, and modelled it on the American Harper's Bazaar. From 1938 until September 1943 its art director was Bruno Munari, later one of the leading figures of Italian design. The war interrupted publication, and the magazine returned to the newsstands in 1946. This issue comes from three years later, when Grazia had resumed its weekly rhythm and its numbering, ten weeks before issue No. 442 of August 1949.

A magazine that arrived every week, and was meant to.

The Fashion Landscape
Looking Outward

In 1949 Italy did not yet have a fashion system with an international voice. Paris led, and Italian readers followed foreign collections through magazines such as this. Within two years the situation began to change: Giovanni Battista Giorgini's First Italian High Fashion Show, held in Florence on 12 February 1951 for an audience that included American buyers, marked the first serious challenge to Paris for the American market. Grazia's issues from 1949 record Italian taste in the moment before that shift, when the magazine's task was to bring fashion to its readers rather than to export it.

The Wider Culture
The Changing Reader

When Grazia returned in 1946, its subtitle still promised a friend at the reader's side, but Mondadori's own history notes that the women it addressed were changing. Before the war the magazine had leaned towards traditional values of home and family. After it, Grazia increasingly introduced its readers to a modernity associated with American life, with cars, televisions, supermarkets and household appliances. In 1949 these were still largely aspirations in Italy, a country rebuilding after the war. The weekly format suited the transition: each issue offered a small, regular instalment of advice, fashion and news, received in the home week after week.

Reading the Object
Twenty-Four Pages

At 24 pages this is a slim issue, and its brevity is part of what it records. A weekly of this size was designed to be read within days and replaced by the next, with fashion, features and advertising compressed into a few spreads. The economy of the format is part of its character. The issue's value lies in this immediacy: it is not a retrospective view of 1949 but a piece of the year itself, as it was printed and read.

Not a view of 1949, but a piece of the year itself.

Why It Matters Now
Ephemera of the Reconstruction

Weekly magazines were the most ephemeral of printed goods, and slim issues like this one were rarely kept. Those that survive offer a direct record of everyday reading in post-war Italy, before the country's fashion and design became internationally known. Grazia is today one of the best-known Italian magazine titles, with editions in many countries; its 1949 issues document it at a much smaller scale, addressed to Italian readers alone. For collectors of Italian fashion history, they mark the starting point of a story that would soon move from Milan and Florence to the rest of the world.
