Fashion, drawn and described, 1895.
Harper & Brothers launched Harper's Bazar in 1867, taking the Berlin magazine Der Bazar as its model. Through the 1890s, under Margaret Sangster, it combined fashion plates and patterns with fiction and essays.
In the 1890s American magazines grew in number and circulation, and illustration became central to their appeal. Covers and plates were commissioned from a new generation of artists.
Read today, the issue shows fashion presented through engraved plates, patterns and descriptive text, before photography took their place in the fashion press.
