A weekly record of fashion, 1895.
Harper & Brothers founded Harper's Bazar in 1867, taking the Berlin magazine Der Bazar as its model. It is often described as America's first fashion magazine, and in the 1890s it combined fashion plates and patterns with fiction and essays.
The 1890s in America were years of rapid growth in cities, department stores and the illustrated press. Magazines such as Harper's Bazar brought European fashion to American readers week by week.
