A magazine cover by Françoise Gilot, published in her late nineties: the painter long overshadowed by Picasso, given the front page in her own right.
This issue of Harper's Bazaar Art was published in 2019, with cover artwork by Françoise Gilot. Harper's Bazaar Art is the magazine's dedicated art edition, in which artists are invited to create or contribute covers and the pages explore the meeting of art and fashion. Gilot, born in 1921, was in her late nineties when it appeared, and she continued to paint until the end of her long life in 2023.
A painter's work, given the front page.
Harper's Bazaar, founded in New York in 1867, has a long history of working with artists. Its covers have carried work by Erté, Cassandre, Jean Cocteau and many others, and its art editions continue that tradition with covers by contemporary artists. A Gilot cover places her within that lineage.
Françoise Gilot met Pablo Picasso in 1943, when she was 21, and their relationship lasted around ten years. Her memoir, Life with Picasso, published in 1964, made her widely known, but for decades her own painting was overshadowed by that association. In later life her work received increasing recognition in its own right, with exhibitions and museum acquisitions.
An artist's cover turns the magazine into a carrier for an original image, printed and distributed far more widely than a painting could be. For collectors, it offers an affordable way to own a published work by a significant artist, in the form in which it first reached the public.
An original image, reaching the public in print.
Gilot died in 2023 at the age of 101, and interest in her work has continued to grow. A 2019 magazine cover records her activity in her final years. This copy is in very good condition, with only a slight scratch on the spine.
Renewed attention to twentieth-century women artists has increased interest in Gilot's work.
Art editions were printed in limited runs; copies in very good condition are less common.
The meeting of art and fashion in print remains a strong collecting field.
