Copenhagen, Malmö, Oslo, Stockholm and Moscow in 2003, seen through Louis Vuitton's City Guide and drawn by Rubén Toledo. The volume sets Scandinavian design culture beside the architecture and theatre of the Russian capital.
This is the 2003 Louis Vuitton City Guide, Volume IV, covering Copenhagen, Malmö, Oslo, Stockholm and Moscow. It was published by Louis Vuitton Malletier in English and illustrated by Rubén Toledo.
Scandinavian design beside the Russian capital.
Louis Vuitton began as a trunk maker in Paris in 1854, and travel has remained central to the house. In 1998 it extended that idea to the page with its City Guides, written by independent journalists and authors rather than by the house itself.
Copenhagen and Stockholm are closely associated with Scandinavian design in furniture, architecture and the decorative arts. Moscow, with its monumental architecture and long theatrical tradition, offers a contrast within the same volume.
Many of the addresses recorded in 2003 have since changed or closed. Read today, the guide shows where these cities ate, shopped and spent their evenings at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
A map of five cities as they were in 2003.
Early editions of the Louis Vuitton City Guides are collected as fashion and travel ephemera, and they are useful to writers, stylists and set designers researching the 2000s.
Louis Vuitton publications are collected alongside fashion books and travel ephemera.
Guides were used and replaced by newer editions, so early copies are fewer.
Interest in the style and culture of the early 2000s continues to grow.
