Gabrielle Chanel's legacy, shown in Rome four years into Karl Lagerfeld's direction. The catalogue records the house presenting its history at the moment it was being redefined.
This is the Italian softcover catalogue of Hommage a Chanel, a retrospective of the house held in Rome in 1987.
A house reviewing its history mid-revival.
Karl Lagerfeld became artistic director in 1983. He restored haute couture, shaped Chanel ready-to-wear and revived the Cruise collections.
In 1987 Chanel launched its first watches, with the Premiere, and Lagerfeld photographed his first advertising campaign for the house, with Ines de la Fressange.
The catalogue sets Chanel's archive pieces and tailoring alongside the house's 1980s designs, in Italian, for an audience outside Paris.
The archive and the 1980s, side by side.
Catalogues of the early Lagerfeld years document how Chanel presented its own past while redefining it, a subject for fashion libraries and researchers.
Printed material from Lagerfeld's early years at Chanel draws collectors of the house and of the designer.
Catalogues were printed for the run of a single exhibition, so copies are fewer than general fashion books.
The history of fashion exhibitions is a growing field of research and collecting.
