A saffron shade and a patterned 'Double Dash' design, sold under the Dior name. Hosiery was one of the first ways the house reached beyond couture, beginning with stockings in 1949.
These Christian Dior tights date from the 1980s. They are in saffron with the Double Dash design, one size, and the packaging carries the bilingual term Bas-Collants.
A couture name on everyday hosiery.
Marc Bohan was artistic director of Christian Dior from 1961 to 1989. During these years the house's licensed lines, including hosiery, offered the Dior name in many colours and patterns.
From 1948 Dior signed agreements that carried its name beyond couture. The first licence for stockings in the United States followed in 1949, and by 1950 the name appeared on ties, gloves, scarves and handbags.
The saffron shade and the Double Dash design, both named on the packaging, show how fashion colours and patterns were used to give hosiery a seasonal identity.
Colour names as part of the design.
Original Dior hosiery documents the licensed side of the house and serves stylists and costume departments recreating the 1980s.
Original Dior tights draw interest from collectors of licensed goods and from stylists seeking period accessories.
Hosiery was made to be worn and discarded, so examples surviving from the 1980s are fewer.
Coloured and patterned tights remain a recurring reference to 1980s dressing.
