A summer issue of the British Harper's Bazaar from 1961, on the cusp of the decade that would remake fashion, and before the title merged with Queen.

The Object and Its Moment
July 1961

This is the July 1961 issue of the British edition of Harper's Bazaar. The magazine had been founded in New York in 1867, and its British edition had been published since 1929. In 1961 it was one of the two leading fashion magazines in Britain, alongside Vogue, and it addressed a reader interested in fashion, the arts and society. This summer issue comes from the first years of a decade that would transform British fashion.

A summer issue at the start of a decade of change.

The Fashion Landscape
Between Two Decades

In 1961 fashion still carried much of the structure and formality of the 1950s, but change was already under way. In London, young designers and boutiques were beginning to address a new, younger customer, and photographers were developing a more direct and informal style. Magazines like Harper's Bazaar recorded this transition, presenting established couture alongside the first signs of the youthful fashion that would define the decade.

The Wider Culture
Britain in 1961

The early 1960s in Britain were years of growing prosperity after post-war austerity, with rising consumption, more travel and an expanding youth culture. Fashion and magazines reflected these changes, offering readers both aspiration and practical guidance. A British Harper's Bazaar from 1961 captures that moment before the full arrival of Swinging London later in the decade.

Reading the Object
A Summer Number

A July issue would typically focus on summer dressing, holidays and leisure, presenting the clothes and destinations of the season. Its pages combine fashion photography, features and advertising, giving a complete picture of what was fashionable and desirable at the time. The interior of this copy is pristine, so its pages can be read as they were first printed.

Why It Matters Now
Before Harper's & Queen

In 1970 the British Harper's Bazaar merged with Queen to form Harper's & Queen, the name it kept until 2006. Issues of the British edition from the early 1960s therefore record the magazine in its earlier form, at a moment of change in British fashion. This copy has a sound spine and a pristine interior, with light fading and a crease to the cover.
