The Object and Its Moment
January 1954

This is the January 1954 issue of American Vogue, 120 pages in colour and black and white. On the cover is Jean Patchett, photographed by Erwin Blumenfeld; inside are features on summer dressing, Vogue living, Vogue food, travel and Elba, the Italian island. Patchett was among the most photographed models of the early 1950s, known for a composed, elegant face that suited the precise styling of the period. Blumenfeld had already photographed her for one of Vogue's best-known covers, in January 1950, in which her face was reduced to a single eye, a brow, a mouth and a beauty spot.

One of the decade's defining faces, by one of its most inventive photographers.

The Fashion Landscape
The Photographer as Inventor

Erwin Blumenfeld, born in Berlin in 1897, came to fashion photography after years as an artist and photographer in Europe, and worked in New York for Harper's Bazaar and then Vogue from the 1940s. He brought to fashion the techniques of experimental photography: mirrors, solarisation, colour filters, cropping and graphic reduction. His covers often simplified the model's image to a few strong elements, making the magazine immediately recognisable on the newsstand. In the 1950s, when much fashion photography favoured polished elegance, his work showed how far the genre could be pushed while still presenting clothes.

The Wider Culture
Looking to Italy

The issue's travel feature on Elba reflects a wider post-war interest in Italy. American readers in the 1950s discovered Italian fashion, design, food and holidays with growing enthusiasm, encouraged by the Florence fashion shows that began in 1951 and by the films and travel writing of the period. Summer dressing and a Mediterranean island, presented in the depths of winter, offered both practical planning for the season ahead and a form of escape. Vogue living and Vogue food extended the magazine's authority from clothes to the home and the table.

Reading the Object
A January Looking Ahead

January issues traditionally looked forward. This one combines a cover by a photographer known for formal invention with features that plan the year ahead: summer clothes, travel destinations, home and food. The mix of colour and black-and-white pages reflects the printing of the period, when colour was reserved for selected spreads. The cover, built around a model and a photographer at the height of their reputations, works as a statement of Vogue's visual standards at the start of the year.

A cover as a statement of the magazine's visual standard.

Why It Matters Now
Blumenfeld in Print

Blumenfeld's covers are among the most studied in the history of fashion photography, and original magazines remain the primary way to see them as they were first published. Issues featuring Jean Patchett are also sought for their record of one of the leading models of the decade. This copy has a sound spine and a pristine interior, with age creases and some cover marks, and it preserves the issue as it appeared on the newsstand in 1954.
