A pocket guide to four northern cities, published in French by a house that began as a maker of travelling trunks. It records where Louis Vuitton sent its readers in 2002.
This Louis Vuitton City Guide is the 2002 French edition covering Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Stockholm. It has 140 pages and a pastel lime green paper cover, and measures 12.1 x 20.5 cm.
Four northern cities in one volume.
Louis Vuitton was founded in Paris in 1854 as a trunk maker, and travel has remained central to the house. The City Guide series, launched in 1998, carried that association into publishing.
Books have long held a place in Louis Vuitton's history; Gaston-Louis Vuitton, grandson of the founder, was a noted collector and bibliophile. The City Guides draw on contributions from journalists and writers.
The compact paperback format suits travel, and the pastel lime green cover is in excellent condition.
A compact format, made to be carried.
The City Guides have been updated many times since 1998. A 2002 edition records the addresses and recommendations of its moment.
Louis Vuitton's printed publications attract collectors of the house and of travel books.
Older City Guide editions have been replaced by newer ones, so earlier copies circulate mainly on the vintage market.
Travel is a recognised theme in Louis Vuitton's history, from trunks to publishing.
