Sixty years of Vogue illustration, distilled into a calendar for 1985. It belongs to the moment when fashion drawing was being rediscovered after decades of photography.
This Thames & Hudson calendar for 1985 takes its title from William Packer's Fashion Drawing in Vogue, first published by Thames & Hudson in 1983.
Vogue's illustrators, month by month.
By the 1980s photography had long replaced drawing on Vogue's covers and fashion pages. Packer's book helped restore fashion illustration as a subject of serious attention.
Packer, a painter and for many years principal art critic of the Financial Times, arranged sixty years of Vogue drawings in three periods: 1923–1934, 1935–1946 and 1947–1983.
The book's artists include Georges Lepape, Eduardo Benito, Pierre Brissaud, Carl Erickson ('Eric'), Rene Bouche, Marcel Vertes, Rene Gruau and Salvador Dali.
From Lepape to Gruau.
Calendars were made for one year and usually discarded, so they survive far less often than the books they accompanied.
Fashion drawing, from the 1920s to the 1980s, draws steady interest from collectors and researchers.
Calendars were discarded after use, so period copies are fewer than the books.
The renewed interest in fashion drawing that began in the 1980s continues in exhibitions and publishing.
