A 1938 self-portrait takes the place of the fashion cover on an edition sold only at Tate. It records, in print, the passage of Kahlo's image into fashion that the exhibition itself examines.
This collector's edition of Harper's Bazaar, dated July/August 2026, was produced for Frida: The Making of an Icon at Tate Modern and sold only through Tate. Its exclusive cover reproduces Frida Kahlo's The Frame (1938).
A self-portrait in the place of a fashion cover.
Fashion titles have increasingly issued alternative covers tied to museum exhibitions, sold in the institution's shop rather than on the newsstand. These editions are printed for a limited period and are rarely reissued.
Organised by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, with Tate Modern, the exhibition runs from 25 June 2026 to 3 January 2027. It shows more than thirty works by Kahlo alongside her contemporaries and later artists, and closes with 'Fridamania', the commercial afterlife of her image.
The Frame is painted in oil on aluminium and set within reverse-painted glass made by Mexican artisans. Shown in New York in 1938 and in Paris in 1939, with a preface by Andre Breton, it was bought by the French State in 1939 and belongs to the Centre Pompidou.
A small painting, now at magazine scale.
The exhibition studies how Kahlo's image entered fashion and commerce; this cover is a printed example of that process, dated and tied to a single venue.
Covers produced for a single exhibition draw interest from collectors of both magazines and museum ephemera.
The edition was sold only through Tate, so copies are fewer than the standard newsstand issue.
Kahlo's dress and image remain a recurring reference in fashion editorial and design.
