DESCRIPTION
A GF Ferré crewneck sweatshirt from the late 1990s to early 2000s, in cream heavy cotton, with bold stencilled lettering on the front reading "God Save The King", red embroidered "veryBrit" lettering on the sleeve, and an "English Attitude" script with a portrait print on the back. It is finished with striped ribbed collar and cuffs and a small logo patch at the lower front.

GF Ferré was the younger, more casual line of Gianfranco Ferré, the Milanese designer trained as an architect and known as the architect of fashion, who was artistic director of Christian Dior from 1989 to 1996. The slogan plays on the British national anthem, which British punk had reworked in the late 1970s, and the graphics treat British youth style with an Italian eye.

Size IT 40, cut in a baggy, oversized fit. It is in very good vintage condition, with light signs of wear; images true to condition.

The Object and Its Moment

British attitude, through an Italian eye.

The Fashion Landscape
The Architect of Fashion

Gianfranco Ferré trained as an architect in Milan and became known for the precise, constructed quality of his clothes. He was artistic director of Christian Dior from 1989 to 1996, alongside his own house. GF Ferré was his younger, more casual line.

The Wider Culture
Anthem and Attitude

The slogan plays on the British national anthem, famously reworked by punk in the late 1970s. At the turn of the millennium, Italian fashion often drew on British youth culture, translating its irreverence into well-made sportswear.

Reading the Object
Front, Sleeve and Back

The graphics work on three sides: stencilled capitals on the front, a red embroidered signature on the sleeve and a script and portrait on the back. The heavy cotton and striped ribs give the piece substance, and the baggy, oversized cut is typical of the period.

Graphics on every side.

Why It Matters Now
