The Harrods Christmas catalogue for 1986, with a cover by the French poster artist Razzia. It records the festive season of the Knightsbridge store through the graphic language of the period.
This is an original Harrods catalogue for the Christmas and winter season of 1986, with a front cover illustrated by Razzia, the French artist Gérard Courbouleix-Dénériaz.
Christmas in Knightsbridge, drawn by Razzia.
Harrods was founded by Charles Henry Harrod in 1849 and grew into one of London's principal department stores on its Knightsbridge site. In 1985 it passed, with the House of Fraser group, to the Al-Fayed brothers, and its catalogues of the period presented the store as a destination for luxury goods.
Razzia's work belongs to a revival of illustrated poster art in the 1980s, drawing on the graphic language of the Art Deco period. His clients have included Louis Vuitton, Deauville and several Champagne houses, as well as Harrods.
The cover places a seasonal shopping publication within the tradition of commissioned commercial art. Inside, the catalogue records the goods and presentation of the store at Christmas 1986.
A shopping catalogue in the tradition of the illustrated poster.
Seasonal catalogues were made to be used and replaced. Surviving copies are collected for their covers and as records of British luxury retail.
Catalogues with commissioned covers are collected for their artwork as well as their content.
Catalogues were issued for a single season and replaced the following year.
Interest in the visual culture of 1980s luxury retail continues to grow.
