France beyond Paris: five southern cities, from Cézanne's Aix to La Ville Rose, as Louis Vuitton's City Guide saw them in 2003.
This is Volume II of the 2003 Louis Vuitton City Guide collection, published by Louis Vuitton Malletier in English and illustrated by Rubén Toledo. It covers Aix-en-Provence, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille and Toulouse.
Five French cities beyond the capital.
Louis Vuitton began as a trunk maker in Paris in 1854, and travel has remained central to the house. In 1998 it extended that idea to the page with its City Guides, written by independent journalists and authors rather than by the house itself.
The five cities show the variety of regional France: Provençal Aix, linked with Cézanne; Bordeaux and its wine culture; Lyon and its gastronomy and silk history; Mediterranean Marseille; and Toulouse, known as La Ville Rose for its terracotta buildings.
The illustrations are by Rubén Toledo, the New York-based artist and fashion illustrator, giving the volume a graphic character beyond that of an ordinary travel book.
A travel book with an illustrator's eye.
Many of the addresses recorded in 2003 have since changed. The guide is collected as travel and fashion ephemera and serves anyone researching these cities in the early 2000s.
Louis Vuitton publications are collected alongside fashion books and travel ephemera.
Guides were used and replaced by newer editions, so early copies are fewer.
Interest in the style and culture of the early 2000s continues to grow.
