Tom Ford joined Gucci in 1990 as a womenswear designer, hired by creative director Dawn Mello. He became creative director in 1994 and left the company in 2004, together with president Domenico De Sole.
In 1993 Maurizio Gucci transferred his shares to the investment group Investcorp, ending the family's involvement in the company. Ford's work over the following decade is widely credited with reviving the house.
