The Object and Its Moment
A Dressing Gown in Silk

This dressing gown dates from the 1980s and is labelled Miss Dior for Saks Fifth Avenue. It is made in printed silk, with a black and ivory check overlaid with Miss Dior logos, crests and baroque emblems. A wide belt ties the open wrap front.

The Miss Dior name, repeated across the check.

The Fashion Landscape
The Miss Dior Name

Miss Dior was first the name of the house's 1947 perfume. In 1967 Marc Bohan, artistic director from 1961 to 1989, used it for Dior's first ready-to-wear line and its boutique, for which a Miss Dior logo was drawn.

The Wider Culture
Paris and New York

Dior opened in New York in 1948, and in 1949 the house signed its first American licence, for hosiery. Saks Fifth Avenue, the department store named in this gown's label, had opened on Fifth Avenue in 1924.

Reading the Object
Structure and Finish

Light shoulder padding and lace-trimmed cuffs give the gown a structured line typical of the 1980s. Side seam pockets and French seams finish it neatly. The print shows no fading.

Structure brought to loungewear.

Why It Matters Now
The Logo Revisited

The Miss Dior logo returned to the runway in Dior's Autumn/Winter 2024 ready-to-wear collection, which looked back to Bohan's 1967 line. This gown shows an earlier use of the same name on printed silk.
