DESCRIPTION
Vogue Paris N°752, the December 1994 / January 1995 issue, was conceived as a tribute to the centenary of cinema. Across 316 pages, the magazine brought together the leading models, photographers, actors and directors of the period around a single theme: the long exchange between fashion and film.

The cover, photographed by Michael Thompson, casts Karen Mulder in the image of 1930s screen glamour, with echoes of Garbo and Dietrich. Inside, Claudia Schiffer is photographed by Marc Hispard in a homage to Brigitte Bardot in Godard's Le Mépris; Isabelle Adjani sits for Brigitte Lacombe; David LaChapelle and Enrique Badulescu reinterpret Blade Runner and Metropolis as fashion stories; and Catherine Deneuve appears alongside Yves Saint Laurent. Portraits of Daniel Day-Lewis, Jeremy Irons, Gérard Depardieu, John Travolta, John Malkovich and Jean Reno complete the issue.

Published early in Joan Juliet Buck's editorship, it remains one of the most collectible French Vogue editions of the 1990s.

In December 1994, Vogue Paris gave its pages to the cinema. The result reads less like a monthly magazine than a record of an era: supermodels cast as screen icons, actors photographed as fashion subjects, and a clear editorial point of view connecting the two.

The Story
A Centenary in Print

Vogue Paris N°752 was published in December 1994 as a double issue for December and January, conceived to mark one hundred years of cinema. The timing was deliberate: the Lumière brothers held the first paid public film screening in Paris in December 1895, and the magazine built its 316 pages around that anniversary. The issue appeared early in Joan Juliet Buck's tenure as editor-in-chief (1994–2001), a period in which French Vogue commissioned filmmakers, writers and artists alongside fashion photographers.

The supermodel era and the history of film, gathered in a single edition.

The Cover
Karen Mulder and 1930s Hollywood

Michael Thompson photographed Karen Mulder in the manner of 1930s studio portraiture: high contrast, deep shadow and light closer to cinematography than to fashion photography. The reference is to the era of Garbo and Dietrich, and it frames the model of 1994 as the successor to the Hollywood star.

Inside the Issue
Contributors and Spreads

Claudia Schiffer is photographed by Marc Hispard in a homage to Brigitte Bardot in Godard's Le Mépris (1963). Isabelle Adjani sits for Brigitte Lacombe. David LaChapelle and Enrique Badulescu contribute fashion stories drawn from Blade Runner and Metropolis. Further pages include Chris Marker's Effets et Gestes, Catherine Deneuve with Yves Saint Laurent in La Belle et le Couturier, portraits of Jean Reno, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jeremy Irons, Gérard Depardieu, John Travolta and John Malkovich, and Platine: Bijoux Éternels, a jewellery tribute to Marilyn Monroe.

Why It's Rare
Rarity and Collector Demand

Magazines were printed to last a season, and thirty years of handling, humidity and light have reduced the number of intact copies. Some copies were originally distributed with a metal film-reel canister, and those that retain it are especially scarce. The issue also belongs to the height of the 1990s supermodel period, which remains one of the most collected eras of fashion publishing.
