Lobster red suede and a gold-tone floral buckle: colour and ornament concentrated at the waist. A belt that reflects the strong palette of Margaretha Ley's Escada.
This Escada belt dates from the 1980s. It is made in lobster red suede with a gold-tone buckle decorated with metal flower details, and measures 90 x 5 cm, with a 6.5 cm buckle.
Colour and ornament at the waist.
Escada was founded in Munich in 1976 by Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley and named after an Irish racehorse. During the 1980s the label grew quickly, entering the US market in 1982, with Margaretha Ley's design known for strong colour and coordinated looks.
Wide, high-waisted belts were a familiar accessory of 1980s dressing, used to cinch oversized jackets, knits and dresses. Bright colours and decorative buckles made them a focal point of the outfit.
The lobster red suede gives the belt its strong colour, while the gold-tone flower details add ornament to the buckle. The belt is in very good vintage condition.
A strong colour with a floral buckle.
Brightly coloured belts from the 1980s remain an easy way to add colour and shape to an outfit. Escada examples carry the label's characteristic palette.
Coloured statement belts from the 1980s draw interest as a way to define the waist.
Suede marks and fades with use, so bright suede belts in very good condition are fewer.
High-waisted styling remains a recurring reference to 1980s fashion.
