A small ladybird in gilded gold tone, signed Chr Dior on the reverse. Light in scale and in spirit, it shows the playful side of the house's costume jewellery.
This Christian Dior pin brooch dates from the 1980s. It takes the form of a ladybird in gilded gold-tone metal, with a clutch back fastening, and is stamped Chr Dior on the reverse. It measures 2.5 cm.
Small in scale, signed on the reverse.
From 1955 Dior's costume jewellery was produced under licence by Henkel & Grosse, a firm based in Pforzheim, Germany. In the 1980s, while Marc Bohan was artistic director, the licensed jewellery continued to accompany the house's clothes and accessories.
Insects have a long history in jewellery, from Victorian and Art Nouveau designs to twentieth-century costume pieces. The ladybird carries associations with good fortune in European folklore, which has helped make it a recurring motif.
The ladybird is modelled in gilded gold-tone metal, giving the small form some depth. A clutch back secures the pin, and the Chr Dior stamp on the reverse identifies the house. The piece is in very good vintage condition.
The signature sits on the reverse.
Pin brooches remain an easy way to personalise jackets, collars and knitwear. Signed Dior examples from the period combine that use with the interest that surrounds the house's costume jewellery.
Figurative pins, including insects and animals, attract interest among collectors of signed costume jewellery.
Small pins are easily lost and gold-tone surfaces wear with use, which affects how many survive in very good condition.
The ladybird's long association with good fortune has kept it in use as a motif across jewellery and accessories.
