Horsebit links and stripes in orange, white and gold, set out across a silk square. The house's equestrian hardware turned into print.
This Gucci silk scarf dates from the 1980s. Its design combines a horsebit chain with stripes in orange, white and gold, and it was made in Italy. It measures 88 x 88 cm.
Equestrian hardware, turned into print.
Gucci's early business served riders as well as travellers, and many of the house's motifs come from that world. The horsebit was first used as a decoration on the Gucci loafer in 1953, and the green-red-green web stripe, taken from a saddle girth, dates from the early 1950s.
Gucci's silk scarves developed from the 1960s, when the illustrator Vittorio Accornero began working with the house. Floral, equestrian and nautical themes recur across its silk archive.
The stripes give the square a strong graphic structure, and the horsebit chain links the design to the house's equestrian codes. The silk is in very good condition.
Stripes structured by the horsebit.
The horsebit remains one of the themes Gucci revisits in its silk. A 1980s square shows how the motif was used before its recent reinterpretations.
Vintage Gucci silk scarves remain a steady category among collectors of the house.
Silk can fade and its edges can wear, so condition plays a large part in how scarves are assessed.
The horsebit and web stripe are recognised Gucci codes with equestrian origins.
